Outreach Buccaneers

Bulugha Farm School
One of Buccaneers’ most successful outreach programs is in its eighth year. Following the loss of the school to a fire, Buccaneers adopted an active supportive stance to the school. Initial successes included the re-building of the school out of ISCOR funding. This was followed by an invitation by the school for Buccaneers to remain involved in the re-habilitation and development of the school. With the onus on Bulugha to create and drive the relationship, a weekly cultural concert was choreographed by the learners for the foreign travellers. Listed below are some of the results of this on-going relationship:

Funds for the electrification of the school raised by 2002
Daily feeding scheme initiated in which access to hot foods and diet variety allowed for a balanced and nutrient enriched diet.
Installation and equipping of a library
Teacher exchange program of volunteer teachers from Nuremberg University, Germany
School maintenance and resource upkeep using foreign travellers
Initiation of a legal transportation to and from school, now state assisted.
Scholarships to higher education for two learners each year
Annual school trip for seniors at the end of the school year
Buccaneers in conjunction with Nuremberg University and the Mandela Foundation have established a 16 strong computer centre with appropriate networking and ongoing maintenance and upgrading

Volunteer Africa 32°south
In a joint venture with African Heartland Journeys and Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve, Buccaneers have assisted in the formation of VA 32° south, a volunteer based organisation aimed at addressing the development of computer literacy skills and sport in the rural schools of the Wild Coast. VA 32°south will have its first involvement with the schools from January 2006.
