Stand Up Paddling (SUP'ing)
Although this sport is fairly new to take off in South Africa it has Hawaiian heritage in the 1960's when surf instructors used the technique to position themselves to take photos in the sea. Stand up paddling involves a board bigger than the standard surfboard which the surfer stands on and then uses a single paddle to move through the sea and catch waves. The technique allows surfers paddle longer distances and paddle faster more easily. Stand up paddling is an easier sport to master than traditional surfing and has proved popular with women who tend to have a lower centre of gravity which makes balancing more easy. 2012 saw the first Stand Up Paddling world series hosted in Turtle Bay, Hawaii, where stand up paddlers took part in races and showed off their surfing technique in an attempt to become the first champions of stand up paddling.
