A Little Background Knowledge:  You may have noticed that there are 2 ways to spell Cintsa (or Chintsa!) - both are acknowledged & in use but Cintsa without the "h" is generally recognised as the old spelling of the name & Chintsa is the new one!

Bulugha Farm School

Buccaneers Backpackers has been involved with the local rural schools in Chintsa since the mid 80’s. What began with assisting in extra-mural activities and upgrading the maths & science programs with teachers, extended to the development of existing facilities & buildings. In the 90’s Bulugha Farm School burnt down to the ground. The Buccaneers family was the driving force behind gaining sponsorship for the re-building of the school.

Buccaneers Supports Bulugha School

In the early 90’s Buccaneers began a partnership with Nuremburg University in Germany. Nuremburg students (who paid their own travel expenses) were sponsored by Buccaneers with board & lodging and began providing in-school support whilst gaining valuable teaching experience at Bulugha School. In 1995, as a result of this direct link between Buccs & Nuremburg, a computer lab was established at the school with the support of the Mandela Foundation & the German Consulate in Cape Town. This programme has developed & grown over the years and since 2006 has been integrated into the VA32 Wild Coast Schools Project which provides additional teaching support from VA32 volunteers & a structured computer literacy curriculum.

Today Buccaneers still works closely with Bulugha School in supporting their weekly concerts with an international audience! The concert raises money to sustain on-going projects at the school such as the feeding scheme. In the past this relationship between Buccaneers Backpackers and Bulugha has inspired the international backpacking community to raise money for initiatives to modify the school with electricity, a netball field and books & resources to create a reading corner. All of our guests are invited to join the Bulugha School Concert on Thursday afternoons for free, where they are regaled with traditional Xhosa songs & have the opportunity to take a glimpse into the rural school lives of our learners. Take a peek the concert with this youtube movie!

Friends of Chintsa

Friends of Chintsa Logo
The Friends of Chintsa is an NPO (non-profit organization) affiliated to WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) which works directly with communities in Chintsa and the Greater Wild Coast area, in striving for positive change. Friends of Chintsa manages and facilitates the financial requirements of initiatives which would otherwise struggle to be realised through lack of funding and support. Friends of Chintsa relies on both financial donations and donations in kind to drive these initiatives. We are currently looking for support for the following initiatives
Big Green e-Machine: Local tour company African Heartland Journeys (AHJ) donated a huge green Land Rover to be converted into a mobile computer lab! This project is up and running but requires donations to contribute towards basic running cocsts (i.e., fuel electricity & maintenance!)
UNSTRESSED Surf School: An exiting new initiative which provides a surf academy for young children from Chintsa. Local surfers donate their time to make this happen every weekend.
Transforming Learning Environments: Many local schools have a severe lack of learning space, it is common-palce for our students to share a broken & damaged chair during class. This initiative is a long term project which has already seen many classrooms and schools transformed. There will always be more. Friends of Chintsa need support in providing basic building materials for improving structures and facilities.
